Vanishing Fore Egde Painting

This is an age-old technique. By fanning the pages, the edges can be painted. When the book is closed, the paintings are hidden under a layer of gilding. It's a process where you can't rush, but you still need to be quick. To prevent the gilding from getting too wet, or the paint from running on the page, you should apply the paint in very small amounts at a time and allow a spot to dry before applying another coat. At the same time, the book should not be clamped for too long, because then it no longer bends back into its normal shape. So before you start, you must have a clear plan.

I learned the basic technique on a 1 day course with Martin Frost (https://www.foredgefrost.co.uk/) He makes absolute masterpieces and practices it as his profession. To become as good as him, I believe you have to follow an apprenticeship for 7 years, 😅but for hobbyists like me and as an introduction to this beautiful (almost extinct) craft, the course is perfect!
