I used to sketch and draw a lot and I was pretty good at it. But that was a long time ago and I notice that I have forgotten a lot, playing with shadows, simple perspective techniques, finding the right proportions and so on. With Zentangle Circles, Drawing with vanishing points and 3D swirl drawing I started with the basics and got the taste for it again. The only way to improve my skills is to practice, practice and practice. I want to share my attempts to become better at drawing with you here. Hopefully there will be an upward trend and the drawings will get better 😊.
I love botanical drawings and prints. My partner gave me a book with a beautiful collection of diverse examples: Botanical Art from the golden age of scientific discovery (Anna Laurent, 2016, The university of Chicago Press, ISBN-13: 978-0-226-32107-3). It made sense that to choose an image from this book for a first exercise with sketching and use of colour. I will definitely practice with more images from this book. (05-2025/06-2025)
Recently we were on holiday in Seville, Spain. It is a beautiful city where literally everything is decorated with tiles, wood carvings and ironwork. I had brought my small watercolour pad and this time I wanted to try to make a sketch of an architectural element. From the Puente de Isabell II I had taken several photos of the view and then I chose the photo above to sketch the fence. I left out the buildings and the trees in the background are a bit rough, there are also all kinds of perspective errors. But for now I was interested in the fence itself and I am happy with this result. (06-2025)
